Irish Claddagh Latched Wooden Box: 7.5" x 7.5" x 2.75"
This natural untreated wooden box comes with a gold toned metal clasp and matching hinges. It is engraved with our Irish Claddagh design.
The Claddagh is a famously romantic Irish design, representing Friendship (Hands), Love(Heart) and Loyalty(Crown). The origin of this design is as beautiful as the design itself.
The story (extremely abridged) goes roughly as follows. A young Irish fisherman named Richard from a village near Galloway who had just met a woman he truly loved and intended to marry when was taken captive by Spanish pirates. He and sold the Goldsmith masters where he tended the fires for years, each day stealing a mote of gold. Eventually he either escaped or bought his freedom (it is unknown which) and returned home to find that his truelove had remained true all the years he was away. He had accumulated enough gold to fashion her a ring which became known as the Claddagh. It became a common wedding and engagement ring in Ireland and eventually was worn by most the women on the island.
